THE MYSTERY AND INTRIGUE
“I think we found a metal box with treasure inside.” said Jack.
“A box of treasure with cool writing on it.” added Brett.
“I think I can get a shovel under it.” Jack explained.
“Wait a minute!” Derek ordered. “Let me see first.”
Jack and Brett were right. There it was. A small metal box; approximately
one foot long, one foot wide and six inches deep with writing on it. Being that
he was already in high school; Derek took charge and looked closely at the
“No way!” said Derek
“What?” asked Jack.
“There.” said Derek.
“What?” asked Jack again.
“That symbol; don’t you know what it is!” asked Derek sounding
“No!” said Jack.
“Me neither.” added Brett.
“It’s a swastika!” shouted Derek excitedly.
“What kind of sticker?” asked Jack.
“A swastika!” shouted Derek.
Jack and Brett did not know what Derek was saying, but because he was so
excited, they were excited. They both did see the funny looking intertwined
backward Z’s that were on the outside
of the metal box.
“It is believed that the original ingredients to make this brandy came from the mountains of Ararat; where Noah’s Ark came to rest. Armenia, or Urartu as it was originally called, was populated by my Armenian ancestors and our lands stretched far and wide. That is, before the Ottoman Empire took control and made my ancestors second class citizens. Eventually, the Young Turks stole our land and brutally murdered many of my ancestors. Armenia is not only the first Christian nation in the world, but it is also where humanity was rekindled after God flooded the earth and killed the non-believing heathens. But just like the Jewish people, the Armenians have been mistreated and massacred for their beliefs. The Turks massacred the Armenians exactly like the Nazi Germans massacred the Jews.” Aram said as he became more agitated.
“Man’s brutal inhumanity to man continues to repeat itself, and it will continue to occur for as long as civilized countries remain silent and accepting of these systematic mass murders as just collateral damage to conflicts and war.” added Fritz. “Each time genocide occurs, it is as if history has been ignored and forgotten. As the civilized countries of the world turn a blind eye to these atrocities, this further emboldens the perpetrators of genocide to make claims that it is their right to commit these murders in the name of protecting their own people, their own religion, cultures and beliefs; and that their governments are law abiding and civilized societies.”
Fritz had read about the history of the former Ottoman Empire and of its eventual demise. In the late 1800s, the Armenians and other ethnic groups began to demand equal rights as they were being treated as second class citizens by the Turkish ruling party. The Armenian requests for equal rights were denied and Sultan Abdul Hamid II, in order to quell uprisings, massacred an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 Armenians in the mid 1890s. The Young Turks political party; which later became known as the Committee of Union and Progress; came to power in 1908 after the revolution and the overthrow of the Sultan. Initially, the Young Turks promised minorities, including Armenians, more rights; but in 1912 that changed when the Ottoman Empire lost seventy five percent of its territory as the Balkans, Greece, Serbia and Bulgaria all broke away from the empire and became independent. The ideology of the Turkish leaders changed as they feared the total collapse of the Ottoman Empire. Turkish refugees claimed that the Christians, including the Armenians, were their enemies.
“As many countries of the world ignored and failed to intercede during the massacre of over one million Armenians from 1915 to 1922, and the Turkish regime was never brought to justice, it is very easy to understand how Adolph Hitler would have anticipated that no one would stand up to Nazi Germany as it implemented a plan to kill over six million innocent Jewish people, whose only crime was to be born Jewish.” said Fritz.
Our strength consists in our speed and in our brutality. Genghis Khan led millions of women and children to slaughter with premeditation and a happy heart. History sees in him solely the founder of a state. It’s a matter of indifference to me what a weak western
European civilization will say about me. I have issued the command; and I’ll have anybody who utters but one word of criticism executed by a firing squad; that our war aim does not consist in reaching certain lines, but in the physical destruction of the enemy. Accordingly, I have placed my death-head formation in readiness for the present only in the East with orders to them to send to death mercilessly and without compassion, men, women, and children of Polish derivation and language. Only thus shall we gain the living space which we need. Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?
There in plain view on a plaque inside the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC was the truth of how Adolf Hitler came up with his extermination plan. Fritz had earlier noted on a display in the museum that Hitler was believed to have made statements about the final solution to the Jewish problem in a June 1939 speech in Berlin, Germany.
THE UNITED STATES RESPONSE
As he approached, Fritz heard Satie’s uncle Hovhannes state,
“It’s our own government’s fault. Every election year they give lip
service to finally recognizing the Armenian massacres as genocide.”
“Hovhannes is right.” added Satie’s cousin Anoush. “Even though many
other countries have recognized that the Turks committed this genocide, our government does double talk in order to not offend the Turkish government.”
“Many people claim that our government’s reluctance to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide is for military reasons. It is a fact that we have US military bases in Turkey that give the United States a presence and an ability to launch an attack in Iraq or Afghanistan, or to defend Israel in the event of a war in the Middle East.” added
“I think there must be something else.” said Anoush. “I don’t know what it is, but I believe that the United States Government is hiding something and not telling us the
complete truth. I think they have proof that Turkey committed genocide, but they don’t want to be forced to admit it. Why else would our government not do the right thing and
recognize this genocide; like so many other countries have done?”
In March 2010, Turkey recalled its Ambassador to the United States, after a resolution was passed by the United States House of Foreign Affairs Committee that declared the 1915-1922 massacres of millions of Armenians genocide. The Obama Administration quickly moved to smooth relations with Turkey by stating that President Obama opposed the resolution. The Obama Administration also pledged that it would work hard to ensure that the Armenian Genocide resolution would never be presented for a vote by the U.S. House of Representatives. This action by the Obama Administration to deny the Armenian people an opportunity to have the massacres of the Armenians finally
acknowledged as genocide was taken, despite the fact that President Obama was supportive of this legislation when he was in the United States Senate and a candidate for President. The change in President Obama’s position of support to acknowledge the Armenian massacres as genocide was a result of the United States seeking Turkey’s support in backing sanctions against Iran, as well as the fact that the United States continued to utilize military bases located in Turkey for training missions for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
